MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985), a Russian born painter, lived and worked mainly in Paris, and is remembered as one of the greatest masters of the school of Paris. Chagall, a prolific painter, was also a book illustrator, stained glass artist, and costume designer. His painting style drew on both Cubism and Orphism. He used these styles to create his spatial dislocations and prismatic color effects. Chagall grew up in a deeply religious household, which inspired the subject matter for the majority of his paintings depicting Jewish life, folklore, and Bible stories. His paintings are internationally collected, in both museums and private collections.
