Sam Francis was born in San Mateo, CA in 1923. He was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, CA. There, he received his B.A. in 1943 and his M.F.A. in 1950. He was also educated at Atelier Fernand Leger, Paris, France. He has received worldwide recognition for his artistic ability and has been the recipient of numerous awards for his incredible mastery of painting and expression. He was awarded first prize at the International Biennial Exhibition of Prints in Tokyo, Japan in 1962. A year later he was awarded the Tat Mus, Dunn International Prize in London, England. That same year, he also won the Tamarind Fel prize at a prestigious show in Albuquerque, NM. His artwork is on display in public and private collections throughout the United States, and in numerous countries throughout the world, fetching exceptionally high prices. One may view his artwork at many museums such as: Guggenheim Museum, NY Museum of Modern Art, NY National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. National Museum of Western Art, Japan Albright Art Gallery, Kunsthaus, Zurich, Switzerland
