ROY LICHTENSTEIN (1923 - 1997) reigns as one of the Masters of American Pop Art. Painter, graphic artist, and sculptor, he is best known for his large-scale renditions of comic-strip art, however later works clearly show the influence of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Although his early paintings were in the Abstract Expressionist style, over time, Lichtenstein became dedicated to the making of art from mass-produced, merchandising images. He combined elements of commercial art, comics and advertisements in his pieces to create blowups of the original cartoon characters, reproduced by hand, with the same technique of dots and bright primary colors used in printing. Sophisticated, ironic, undeniably hip, Lichtenstein's work made pop-culture into art, and art into pop-culture, and his body of work forms an important part of modern Western art-media-culture.
