James Rosenquist, born in 1933 in North Dakota, became a successful artist after his first one man exhibition was sold out in 1962. He became part of the “Pop” art movement when he moved to New York.   In his work, Rosenquist often combines large-scale images, giving his paintings the monumental 'still' effect of a billboard.  He has had comprehensive retrospectives at the Wallraf-Richards Museum, Cologne, and the Whitney Museum, New York.
